If you’re constantly craving unhealthy food, or you’re quitting sugar, when it comes to choosing your meals how do you decide what to buy, make and fuel yourself with? Maybe you look for which foods are fastest, what is cheapest, what is easiest, what will give you the biggest energy hit? It’s very important that you make the right choices for your body. If you think it doesn’t matter, food is just food, I urge you to think again.
Processed, sugary junk foods are not real foods. According to Dr. Mark Hyman, author of Eat Fat, Get Thin, junk foods set the stage for sugar addictions and all the ugly consequences that come with it.
Quitting sugar and processed foods is so essential for health and happiness, I should know, I quit sugar and I feel ten years younger. I also know that setting out on this path alone, without a guide to help you through the process, can be a very daunting task.
I have found Dr Hyman’s information very useful. If you are looking for guidance and support I would love to share with you tips to help you quit sugar and regain the natural balance your body is designed to be at.
The 8 Steps for Quitting Sugar and Ending Cravings
- Eat real food.
Crowd out your unhealthy foods by adding real food to your daily diet. Each of your meals should include lean protein, healthy fat and veggies. - Aim for steady energy.
Foods that give you a quick energy boost also leave you flat faster. Look for foods that give you a slow release of energy, this way you know it will last. Eat a highly nutritious breakfast that contains proteins and healthy fats, such as nuts, seeds, and avocado. Eggs are also a great start to the day if you tolerate them well. If you need a snack have something small mid morning. Make sure your lunch is nourishing and again, leave any wholemeal complex carbs for later in the day. - Quit sugar.
What Dr Hyman teaches is that cutting back on sugar is not enough. To your brain, having sugar is like being addicted to a drug. You have to stop taking it completely in order for your brain to reset. Eliminate all refined sugars, sodas, fruit juices, and artificial sweeteners from your diet. These are all drugs that fuel sugar addiction and keep you from your best health and fitness. - Reduce stress.
When you’re stressed you are more likely to reach for that bag of sweets. Think about what’s causing your stress and build strategies to reduce your anxiety. Meditation or doing an activity you enjoy work very well. - Physical activity.
When you feel your cravings are about to kick in, walk them off. Go to a park or go for a run by the beach. If you need an extra physical challenge try martial arts or boxing, cycling or swimming. - Know your allergies and food sensitivities.
According to Dr Hyman, we often crave the foods that we have a hidden allergy to. These foods can cause inflammation through our system and bring on cravings. The most common hidden allergies are gluten and dairy foods. Cutting these foods out is hard, because we feel lousy without them, but taking a short break will really give you an idea of how much damage they are doing. - Sleep.
A good night’s sleep is essential to give your body time to repair and reset. Creating a healthy bedtime ritual works wonders. Make sure your room is free of all electronic devices and get a good night’s sleep as often as possible. - Supplements.
Based on Dr Hyman’s research there are some supplements and herbs that can assist with reducing sugar cravings to help you quit the sugar addiction. These include Vitamin D and Omega-3s.
